In some poker online legalization news, I recently read that the British government is proposing a new licensing regime for offshore bookies, according to a report in The Guardian newspaper.

The racing industry has long expresssed concern about the financial effect on racing of companies moving offshore and with recent match fixing, betting pattern scandals the government appears to be responding, The Guardian reported.

At issue is how to get offshore bookies to provide information on suspicious betting patterns and also how to have them contribute towards the cost of regulation, the Guardian report said.

As soon as companies move offshore they no longer pay the statutory racing levy. Under a new system they’d have to be licensed in the UK, the report explained.

Even though this mostly pertains to online betting on horse racing, the similarities to online poker are very similar. Many online poker sites are based in offshore locations, so as not to fall under the jurisdictions and laws of individual countries. I have long argued that instead of trying to prosecute these companies, governments should just regulate them and make it legal for its citizens to play online gaming. The battle is making people understand that poker is a game of skill and not a game of luck.

Reading about poker online is good. You’ll pick up on some of the differences that go on at that level of play and you’ll also be more comfortable and know what to expect when you finally take the plunge and sit down for the first time at your new limit.

The second and probably more important railbirding strategy is to hit the nosebleed tables. Watch the top of the online poker players play their game. See if you can dissect why they do what they do and how they do it. A lot of getting good at poker is emulating success. And who’s more successful than those at the top? If and when you can start to recognize their play, then you’ll be more than ready to start smashing the smaller stakes.

Playing long poker tournaments requires a lot of sitting and a lot of staring. Even when you are not in a hand yourself, you must be available at the table for the dealing of future hands, for your blinds, and for getting information on the other players. Outside concerns such as eating and going to the bathroom then become blockades to the game itself, which to some extent can be manipulated in cash games, but in tournaments become more difficult to swing.

So when is a good time to go to the bathroom during a long poker tournament? Of course there are the break periods, though often nature calls outside of these confined spots. Certainly you don’t want to go when your blinds are near to coming, but you also don’t want to miss the great advantage of acting on the button and in other late spots in the hand.

So if you have to miss hands it is probably better to get up when you are near the late middle position, where you have a few hands to miss before your blinds come, is probably the best spot if you aren’t going to be gone too, too long. Otherwise, you’ll just have to chalk it up to biology. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.

Usually, brides decide to have these made or bought specially. So, whether you want roses, candles, or other traditional items is entirely up to you. Consider this though: it is always best to choose colors that correspond with the wedding colors.

There’s a lot of different types of poker online games when playing Hold ‘EM as far as difficulty goes. Think of it as a video game, where there are different settings for difficulty such as easy, medium, hard, and insane. It’s never a very pretty sightyou have two big poker online cards in your hand, say King/Queen suited or Ace Jack unsuited, and the flop comes down all rags. 4, 5, 8 or thereabouts. For some players it can be tempting, especially in the face of very small bets, to continue to try to draw in the online poker hand, figuring that if the turn or the river brings one of your overcards, you will win the pot. Some players will call even larger sized raises trying to hit one of those six cards that might come against the odds and give them top pair. The thing about drawing with overcards, though, is that you never know, when you do hit your draws, whether or not you actually helped yourself or hurt yourself by picking up a pair on the turn or river. Many times improving your casino hand in these kinds of spots can lead to you valuing your hand just enough to put more in when your opponent, who has slowplayed (or regularly bet) a set, two pair, or bigger pairs like pocket aces. You could just be asking to get your whole bank roll taken from you. Drawing against the odds to try to hit a hand that’s not the nuts, and might not even be good against a wide range of holdings, is often asking for trouble. Though sometimes it may work, and may even turn out to be the best hand unimproved, speculating too often in such a way is bound to in the long run get your broke.

In poker, overbetting is generally referred to as when a player bets into a pot with a bet that is more than the size of the pot itself. This is also no different in online poker. This kind of move can generally be interpreted in two vastly different ways, the nature of which often depends on the way the hand has proceeded.

One instance in which a player might overbet the pot is when they have a hand they think is ahead but that they feel is also vulnerable, and they do not want their opponent to continue drawing. The overbet, then, is designed to price the opponent out of the hand and take it down without having to survive further drawing.

Overbetting can also be interpreted, with certain types of players, as a bluff. Obviously, a bigger bet in general is a harder bet to call, so certain types of players will make an oversized bet in an attempt to steal the pot. Overbetting has become so predictable in this manner even in online poker, that many players will try to bluff in less obvious ways.

In general, overbetting is a questionable poker practice that will at least get your opponent wondering what is going on in the hand: “Either he has a monster or he has nothing.”
